Workshop on Space Technology and Geospatial Advancements Held in Tamulpur

Kokrajhar, Jan 10: A workshop on ‘Space Technology and Geospatial Advancement’ was organized at the District Commissioner’s office conference hall in Tamulpur on Thursday. The event was a collaborative effort between the Tamulpur district administration and the Assam State Space Application Centre (ASSAC), under the Department of Science, Technology, and Climate Change, Government of Assam.
The workshop commenced with an inaugural address by ASSAC Director PLN Raju, who emphasized the transformative potential of space technology for making Tamulpur a model district. District Commissioner Pankaj Chakraborty highlighted the application of space technology in addressing local challenges, particularly the pressing issue of human-elephant conflicts in the region.
A book on Tamulpur was unveiled during the workshop. Experts from ASSAC and the North East Space Application Centre (NESAC) presented on the practical applications of space technology. Dr. BK Sandikai of NESAC detailed its benefits for the Northeast region, while Utpal Sharma, Additional Director of ASSAC, discussed the use of Remote Sensing (RS) and Geographic Information Systems (GIS).
The workshop featured demonstrations of ISRO’s mobile apps and dashboards by NESAC officer Niloy Nishant. It also included online discussions with Shashikant Sharma (ISRO Ahmedabad) and Dr. Harish Karnatak (IIRS Dehradun), which facilitated in-depth conversations on leveraging space technology.
Prominent scientists and officials, including Runjun Baruah, Kaustav Baruah, Debashish Baruah, Dipankar Sharma, Jumoni Baruah, Dr. Kalyanjit Sharma, and Pranjit Kalita, contributed insights on geospatial tools and their local applications.
The event highlighted the role of space technology in driving innovation and resolving critical issues in the district, marking a significant step toward the sustainable development of Tamulpur.
